“Tell me about yourself” is not a biography request. It is a short pitch that sets the frame for the rest of the interview. Most strong answers land in 90–120 seconds.
A simple three-part structure
- Present — current role, domain, and one headline achievement.
- Past — two or three relevant experiences that led to your current strengths.
- Future — why this company and role match your next step.
Tailor to the job description
Mirror keywords from the posting: stack, scale, team size, or industry. If the role emphasizes platform work, lead with infrastructure impact; if it is product backend, lead with features shipped and user or revenue outcomes.
What to avoid
- Childhood or unrelated personal history.
- A full walkthrough of every job on your resume.
- Negative comments about current or past employers.
Using a copilot for the opener
Paste the job description before launch. When this question arrives, glance at suggested bullets to recall metrics and project names — then deliver in your own words. The goal is confidence, not a scripted monologue.
